Description
Former mill near the Devon/Cornwall border
Coombe Mill in West Devon has been managed for wildlife for more than 50 years. Most of the reserve is deciduous woodland but there’s also a river, ponds, meadows and a disused railway line that runs along the western boundary.
The River Carey, a tributary of the Tamar, flows through the entire length of the reserve providing 420 yards of double bank and just over 1,000 yards of single bank. The river passes only 35m from the house but at a much lower level and a substantial bridge provides access to the land on the western bank. In the front garden are the remains of the former mill building which now provides an attractive walled garden.
In the centre of the reserve is a large pond, with an island, that is a haven for wildlife including frogs, toads, dragonflies and damselflies.
Coombe Mill is particularly rich in mammals and birds and the current owners have recorded more than 70 species of birds over the years including Goshawk, Marsh tit, Spotted Flycatcher and Bullfinch. The reserve also supports a large bat population with ten species recorded including Greater horseshoe and Barbastelle. Insects include numerous beetle species including glow worm and Violet oil beetle.
Seller insight
“Living at Coombe Mill has been life changing. It has turned a fascination with wildlife into a passion.
It is incredibly special to be surrounded by wildlife day and night. You notice and learn every day and are constantly aware of the changing weather and seasons.
There have been so many extraordinary encounters; a badger sniffing my shoe, otter cubs playing only feet away totally unafraid, bats swarming at dawn, a dog fox playing tag with its cub and a female Roe and fawn grooming each other. Also being the first person in 400 years to see a beaver on the reserve. Such experiences will stay with me for ever.
Coombe Mill has been managed for wildlife for more than half a century and we’re keen to find a buyer with the passion and enthusiasm to protect this remarkable legacy left by Prof. Lovelock.”
