Silverwald Wood, Near Knaresborough, North Yorkshire
- Land size
- 5.5 acres
Description
Silverwald Wood is a really delightful woodland with a number of interesting features. Predominantly broadleaved woodland, it has some mature oak trees with patches of bluebell and native ferns surrounding a seasonal pond where herons and waterfowl gather. A rustic bench is located close to the pond.
From the ridestop entrance , where there’s space to park a vehicle, following the mown pathways through the wood towards the north-western corner, there’s a grove of silver birch and aspen trees which appear especially monochromatic in winter. Here and there, there are coppiced hazel and the odd hawthorn. The northern and western boundaries overlook pastureland where roe deer and geese can frequently be spotted, and an old hedgerow of thorn bushes, delineates this edge.
The eastern quarter of the wood is planted with spruce and Scots pine, which are quite mature and well-spaced, with a number of deciduous trees dotted through, such cherry, rowan, ash, hazel and sycamore. There are also a few elder bushes.
