Description

This charming detached grade II listed cottage sits in approximately one acre of land with rural views over farmers fields and is believed to originate from the 15th century. The modern glazed extension entrance corridor connects the new kitchen/family & utility room with the main cottage. The high spec and handcrafted kitchen/family room is contemporary with bespoke made-to-measure cupboards and drawer units. Double-glazed doors open onto the rear garden patio. The original cottage has many period features including inglenook fireplaces (with wood burning stoves) in the dining and living rooms. There is a family room/bedroom 4, living room with sunroom, dining room and cloakroom. On the first floor, there are three bedrooms. The master has a dressing area which has potential for an ensuite (with the necessary consents) and a modern family bathroom. The garden has a garage, oak car port, and 'container' home office with kitchenette and ensuite. There is a generous level of off road parking within the extensive grounds.

The documented history of Donnington Cottage reaches back to the late eighteenth century. Among its past occupants was Commander George Reynolds RN, who as a young mariner had served aboard HMS Pandora, the vessel sent in 1790 to recover the mutineers from the Bounty.
The Pandora floundered on the Great Barrier Reef on the return voyage; Reynolds was among those who survived. He retired to Donnington in later life and is buried with his wife in the churchyard of St George's, a short walk from the house. For much of the nineteenth century the house was occupied by Henry and Ann King. Henry served as parish clerk and market gardener; Ann was schoolmistress at Donnington School. The grounds were developed as an orchard and later a market garden, both recorded on the 1875 Ordnance Survey plan of the property.
