Waverley Wood, Hawick, Scottish Borders

Land size
8.25 acres

Description

Waverley Wood takes its name from the "Waverley Line"; a disused railway line which forms the western boundary of the wood. The wood is located at the head of a track which was formerly the driveway for Stobs Castle. Divided by the track, the eastern side is mainly spruce plantation and features riverside access to the Slitrig Water. The western side rises steeply from the valley floor to a large level area populated by trees of impressive girth and stature. Although mainly plantation tree stock, the wood has many natural signs which confirm its existence as woodland since ancient times. Many ancient woodland indicator plants are present on the forest floor and a large number of native broadleaves are intermingled with the conifers, giving a well-balanced feel.
