Historical note:
Fox Oak is a signature country house, commissioned by Arthur Ricardo in 1886 and designed by his noted architect brother Halsey Ricardo, a later billiards room wing with bedrooms above added in 1892.
The name from legend states that King Henry VIII was fox hunting and whilst pursuing his quarry, the wily fox climbed the tree in the gardens and so impressed with his guile he called the hounds off- hence the name Fox Oak.
The house retains many architectural features including tile panels in the former ballroom by the celebrated potter William de Morgan, founder member of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society and renowned for his lustre glazes. Original fireplaces, panelled doors, wooden floors, leaded light mullion windows, attractive bow window with window seat, tall shaft with cupola and more complement this most delightful, character, family home.
Arthur Ricardo occupied Fox Oak until 1912, next in line was the Whiteley Trust then passing over to new owners that occupied for 35 years. The current family owners bought Fox Oak in 2007 and have lovingly and sensitively been the proud incumbents.
