The Cheltenham and Gloucester conurbation in the north is the county’s largest population centre alongside South Gloucestershire, adjoining Bristol, in the south. Elsewhere Gloucestershire is predominantly a pastoral market. The Cotswolds is a scenic landscape with arable and sheep farming, also known for tourism and high end residential. Across the River Severn the Forest of Dean around Cinderford is ancient woodland, still heavily wooded, with commercial fruit growing and vineyards around the Wye and Leadon valleys. Gloucestershire’s real agricultural powerhouse, however, is the Severn Vale: a flat fertile alluvial plain with arable, beef and dairy.
