Hesle Bank Wood, Near Hartlepool, Durham
- Land size
- 4.75 acres
Description
A rich and diverse mixed woodland on the banks of Nesbitt Dene, Hesle Bank Wood is reached via a stone track and there is space to park a vehicle at the ride-stop entrance in the south-western corner of the wood.
Following the contour from this point through mature beech and pine trees, until the top of the bank is reached, a trail leads downhill to the left and a rustic bench is situated to give views down and over the Dene.
There are lots of ash trees as well as spruce, sycamore and wych elm and the grassy slope gives way to the north to a hollow with springs, where wild garlic flourishes. Zig-zagging down to the banks of the burn, the scene feels timeless, with shingle beds, craggy limestone outcrops, worn away by millennia of water erosion, fern and moss-coated fallen tree trunks. A dream playground full of wonder for adventure-spirited children and adults alike.
