Description
YHA Bryn Gwynant is located between the villages of Pen y Gwryd and Beddgelert in Nant Gwynant, Caernarfon. Nant Gwynant is a valley in northern Wales known for its steep slopes and glacial lakes including Llyn Gwynant and Llyn Dinas, and is one of the main gateways to Snowdonia National Park. It is popular with tourists attracted to the region’s hiking routes, most notably the Watkin Path, and its waterfalls, particularly those along the Afon Glaslyn. Notable attractions in North Wales include Caernarfon Castle, Portmeirion and the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, all of which are easily accessible.
The property stands on the A498 and can be accessed via the A5 northbound which connects Shropshire and the Midlands to the North Wales coast. The A498 southbound provides routes to Porthmadog, Portmeirion and the popular Black Rock Sands Beach.
HA Bryn Gwynant is a substantial premises occupying a plot of approximately 40 acres of land within the National Park overlooking Lake Gwynant. The main house was built in 1834, and this has been utilised as the main hostel. In addition, there are two bothies, Studio and Pen-y-Bryn Uchaf and a former coach house. It also includes an area of land on the foreshore of the lake and a Grade II listed formal Japanese garden. One of the bothies (Pen-y-Bryn Uchaf) is currently held on lease by a third party. The lease expired in 2017, but the tenants have continued occupation. The premises were purchased by the Youth Hostel in 1958 and have traded for many years under their umbrella. However, it has been closed for several years and not traded in any capacity. Due to the period of closure, the site in general and particular the buildings have fallen into disrepair. They will require major refurbishment and investment by the new owner. However, this is an outstanding site in an excellent location with huge scope for a number of uses whether personal, commercial or educational.
